Tragic Potato Arias (and Lieder)

May 23, 2009

All right, so this blog is really going to be for other stuff, since there are lots of interesting discussions I’d like to have. And yes, it is not dressed for company yet. But since I’ve only just gotten the site, I might as well borrow some space here for the Tragic Potato Aria Competition, since no one else knows about it yet. Original compositions are welcome, or you can just do what I did and alter the words to someone else’s music. 🙂

Comments may be used to enter, or… well, comment.

Here’s my [first? only?] contribution. Surprisingly, it didn’t need all that much modification! Here is a video of Janet Baker so you can sing along. You’ll know where to modify the words…

Che farò senza le patate?
Che farò senza le patate                                 What will I do without potatoes?
Dove andrò senza il mio gnocchi.                Where will I go without my dumplings?
E frittelle (di patate), o Dio, ti amo              And potato pancakes, oh God, I love you!
Io son pure il tuo fedele.                                 I am entirely your loyal one.
E tortini! E pierogi! Ah, non m’avvanza      And scalloped potatoes! And pierogies! Ah, I am not given
più socorso, più speranza                               any help, any hope,
ne dal mondo, ne dal cel.                                neither in this world, nor in heaven.

The orchestra is tuning up…

I’m just getting this blog off the ground (now that the school year is over!), and I’m eager to see how it shapes up. I’m interested in exploring aspects of teaching and learning musicianship, as well as the complicated relationship between music and academia. Hopefully, a variety of topics will follow!
